                                       What is MESA?

MESA stands for Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement. The program assists students by helping them excel in math and science, and become competitively eligible for the most rigorous colleges and universities. MESA does this by offering:

•    Study skills training. Students learn the most effective study techniques for academic achievement, including the best practices for both individual and study groups.

•    MESA Day Academies. Hands-on math and science competitions at local, regional, state and even national levels give students a chance to meet like-minded students and compete for awards.

•    Special programs focusing on math and science. Using Lego Robotics kits, students learn to design, program and build robots and take part in competitions that culminate in an event at the Agilent facilities. All students receive certificates for their efforts, and cash awards are presented to the first, second and third place teams. The competition allows students to apply math and science in solving real-world engineering challenges with help from Santa Rose Junior College MESA students, as well as Agilent volunteers.

•    Connections to industry. Industry representatives sit on MESA Advisory Boards, share career opportunities with students during classroom visits, and offer field trips and internships.

•    Individual Academic Plans. These plans help teachers and school counselors to monitor individual student progress.

•    Career and college exploration. Guest speakers and field trips expose students to different college and career opportunities.

•    A bridge to Santa Rosa Junior College and other colleges. Students who join MESA in high school can continue with the Santa Rosa Junior College MESA Program upon graduation. Other colleges that offer the MESA Program include Chico, San Jose, Sacramento and San Diego State Universities, U.C. Santa Cruz and U.C. Santa Barbara, and many private institutions.

•    Parent leadership development. Parents learn how to become effective advocates for their children’s academic success.

•    PSAT/SAT and college application preparation. Students learn how to best prepare for college entrance exams, and how to apply for college.

•    Financial Aid and scholarship research. Both parents and students learn how to find and apply for funds for college.

•    Celebrating academic success. MESA believes in celebrating student successes through recognition awards, dinner banquets, and college scholarships.

MESA believes in building a college-going culture in its classes.

Who is eligible for MESA?
Students who either excel in math and science, or who need “a leg up” in these subjects are welcome to apply for MESA. Students who are first in their families to apply for college or may have language barriers are specifically encouraged.
