1. The use of verbal and situational irony in Joseph Heller's satire, Catch 22, motivates readers to think critically about: (select from the following)
-the military industrial complex
-bureaucratic systems
-capitalism
-war (specifically from a distance)
-faith
2. Character development in Joseph Heller's satire, Catch 22, motivates readers to think critically about: (select from the following)
-the military industrial complex
-bureaucratic systems
-capitalism
-war (specifically from a distance)
-faith
3. (Honors)
The
five central tenets of existentialism are present in Joseph Heller's
novel and represented through the experiences of, and the interactions
between characters. Select specific characters and situations to discuss
when proving this thesis.
Existence
precedes essence. What you are (your essence) is the
result of your choices (your existence) rather than the reverse. Essence is not
destiny. You are what you make yourself to be.
Time
is of the essence. We are fundamentally time-bound
beings. Unlike measurable, “clock” time, lived time is qualitative: the 'not
yet,” the “already,” and the “present' differ among themselves in meaning and
value
Humanism.
Existentialism is a person-centered philosophy. Though not anti-science, its
focus is on the human individual’s pursuit of identity and meaning amidst the
social and economic pressures of mass society for superficiality and
conformism.
Ethical
considerations are paramount. Though each
existentialist understands the ethical, as with “freedom,” in his or her own
way, the underlying concern is to invite us to examine the authenticity of our
personal lives and of our society
Freedom/responsibility. Existentialism is a philosophy of freedom.
Its basis is the fact that we can stand back our lives and reflect on what we
have been doing. In this sense, we are always “more” than ourselves. But we are
as responsible

individuals.
(1-2 pages, typed, 12 pt font, 1.5 spacing)

"Thoreau was a great writer, philosopher, poet, and withal a most
practical
man, that is, he taught nothing he was not prepared to practise in
himself.
... He went to gaol for the sake of his principles and suffering
humanity.
His essay has, therefore, been sanctified by suffering. Moreover, it is
written for all time. Its incisive logic is unanswerable." - Mohandas
Gandhi
"... when, in the mid-1950's, the United
States
Information Service included as a standard book in all their libraries
around the world a textbook ... which reprinted Thoreau's 'Civil
Disobedience,'
the late Senator Joseph
McCarthy succeeded in having that book removed from the shelves —
specifically
because of the Thoreau essay." - Walter Harding, in The Variorum
Civil
Disobedience
"I became convinced that noncooperation with evil is as much a
moral
obligation as is cooperation with good. No other person has been more
eloquent
and passionate in getting this idea across than Henry David Thoreau. As
a result of his writings and personal witness, we are the heirs of a
legacy
of creative protest." - Martin
Luther King, Jr, Autobiography
Due 10/10
Collaborize post #6:
Discuss the significance of Henry's dream sequence. How do the roles
the characters play in the dream relate to their roles in the rest of
